An unfinished basement has a lot of potential, especially in a Lake Norman property designed to welcome guests. For this Airbnb, Carolina Signature Custom Homes turned an unfinished lower level into a game room and lounge where guests can play, relax, watch TV, and spend time together.
The homeowner wanted to create a family-friendly entertainment space so guests of different ages would have something to enjoy during their stay. What began as a space with exposed studs is now a finished game room with multiple gaming areas, a pool table, lounge seating, and a beverage station.

Basement Game Room Features
One of the biggest highlights of this project was watching the basement begin to feel like a true living space. Starting from the studs, the room went from empty and unwelcoming to a place where families can gather and spend time together.
A pool table anchors the game room, while multiple wall-mounted TVs and individual gaming stations give guests several entertainment options. Counter-height seating creates additional places to gather, and a wall-mounted dartboard with integrated cue and game storage keeps recreational equipment organized.
The beverage station includes cabinetry, countertop space, and an under-counter refrigerator. Light wood-look flooring, blue walls, crisp white trim, black furnishings, and patterned accents bring the different areas together, while a sculptural light fixture over the pool table creates a distinct focal point.
Creating a High-End Look Within the Budget
One of the main challenges was achieving the elevated look the homeowner wanted while staying within a tighter project budget. She had a clear design vision, but some of the original selections she liked were outside the price range planned for the remodel.
Rather than simply eliminating those ideas, we worked with her to find alternatives that created a similar look at a more achievable price point. The countertops required the most consideration, so we went to the showroom with her to compare options in person and see how closely we could match the look she wanted.
That collaborative selection process helped balance the design goals with the available budget without losing the overall feel of the room.
Building a Finished Basement From the Studs
For this Lake Norman remodel, we handled framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, trim, cabinetry, countertops, painting, and flooring as part of the complete construction scope.
Starting from the studs made the basement transformation especially noticeable. As the walls, finishes, cabinetry, and entertainment areas came together, the basement began to feel more like a natural extension of the lake house.
For an Airbnb, that flexibility matters. Guests can play pool, sit down for a game, watch TV, enjoy the dartboard, or settle into the lounge area, all within one finished lower level.
